The
North-east Coast
Exit the town from the Gate of Spilia and take the coastal road, past the old port, to the road for Kontokali and Gouvia. You first meet the area of Potamos, a suburb just four kilometers from the center of the town. Next stop, the village of Evropouli, where you can visit the Museum of Kapodistrias at the peak of a green hill (did you know that the first governor of Greece - Ioannis Kapodistrias - came from Corfu?). The museum is actually the summer residence of the Kapodistrias family, a Venetian-styled mansion of the 17th century.
KONTOKALI - GOUVIA
Reaching at a distance of seven or eight kilometers from the town, you enter the first of two lovely villages: Kontokali and Gouvia. You need to leave the highway for a while, and follow the small road that drives through the two villages (and which used to be the highway a few years ago). A shadowy road with little shops and restaurants from both sides goes along with the sandy beach that leads to the famous marina of Gouvia.
From the opposite side of the highway from Gouvia lies the traditional village of Danillia, a replica of a traditional Corfiot village of the end of the past century, built according to the characteristic architecture of the island.
Just next to the marina at Gouvia you will find the ruins of the Venetian Naval Station of the 18th century.
KOMMENO
Back to the highway and off the highway again to find the cape of Kommeno, one of the coolest places in the area. A small strip of land, entering the sea, a picturesque little church, a hotel complex buried in the green of the hill and cozy little beaches with crystal clear waters.
DASSIA
Get back to the highway and continue your trip for five more kilometers until your reach Dassia, one of the biggest and most organized tourist resources on the island. Huge hotel complexes, well organized camping sites, exotic sandy beaches and great night life. Everything a visitor could ask for.
KASTELO - KASTELINO
Leave the main road again, and visit the branch of the National Art Gallery in Kato Korakiana. Following the signs you should easily find Kastelo and Kastelino, two stone-made buildings, where the art gallery is housed. Apart from exhibits, many cultural events, including music and theater, are taking place at Kastelino.
IPSOS
Continue the way by the sea, and find yourself at the very impressive long beach of lpsos, with sand and fine pebbles. At the end of the beach, known as the "golden mile" by the locals, begins the community of Pyrgi, climbing up a curvy road on the cliffs and offering a magnificent view of the bay of lpsos left back.
Right after Pyrgi, you meet the traditional village of Aghios Markos. Built at the side of the hill over Ipsos, it combines perfectly the cool atmosphere of the mountain with the sunshine of the beach.
NISSAKI
After a few kilometers of curvy road at the eastern coast of Corfu, you come across the small beach of Glyfa. A unique beach with deep blue water, and a few apartment complexes will welcome you to stay and enjoy the cozy beach for as long as you like.
Go further on to Nissaki, where you will find numerous paths that lead you - on foot - through the citrus and cypress trees, to rocky coasts where the water is deep, cold and clear.
KOULOURA - KALAMI
Reaching Kouloura, the easternmost spot of the island, you will be captured by the beauty of the small port and surprised by the clarity of the view across the sea to the coasts of Albania.
In Kalami, the cypress trees seem to grow out of the water. You will find quite a few small tavernas and cafeterias in front of the sea. Don't hesitate to taste local specialties.
